Please note that our central offering in Edmonton is now sold out for our 2017 Municipal Law Seminars. We invite you to consider our Northern and Southern offerings taking place in Grande Prairie and Airdrie, respectively.

Our 32nd Annual Central Municipal Law Seminar will take place on Friday, February 17th in Edmonton. Our program will run from 8:30 AM – 3:45 PM with a casual reception to follow. Doors open at 7:45 AM. The cost to attend is $100 per person (no GST) and includes continental breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks, post-program reception, and a materials booklet to take home. Southern Seminar (Airdrie): Friday, February 24th, 2017

Our 9th Annual Southern Municipal Law Seminar will take place on Friday, February 24th in Airdrie. Our program will run from 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Doors open at 8:30 AM. Northern Seminar (Grande Prairie): Friday, March 3rd, 2017

RMRF, along with senior planners from ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd., will provide a legal and practical review of the upcoming changes to planning and development under the Modernized Municipal Government Act. Topics covered will include inter-municipal planning, MDPs and LUB amendments. What are the changes? What do these changes mean to you, and what do you have to do to be ready and compliant?

Alberta’s New Carbon Levy (Edmonton Location Only)

This session will provide an overview of the Carbon Levy and the potential impacts on your municipality with a focus on actions available for municipalities to minimize the impacts of the Carbon Levy through reducing its carbon footprint.

Modernized Municipal Government Act Brings Big Changes to your Assessment (Edmonton Location Only)

Assessment and taxation is a major area of focus under the MMGA. Learn how the creation of Designated Industrial Property and the centralization of this assessment function could impact your municipality. What changes have been proposed in the regulations regarding assessment complaints, and the valuation of property?

Employment Issues in the Twitterverse

This session will provide a summary of recent developments in the law affecting employees and employers including criminal charges for non-consensual distribution of intimate images, invasion of privacy, protecting employees from derogatory social media posts, and disciplining employees for outside-of-the-office social media usage.

Navigating your Way Through Tricky Waters: Bankruptcy and Collection of Taxes Owing for Linear and Real Property, Machinery and Equipment

With tough economic times comes an increase in companies filing for bankruptcy, and an increase in companies which do not pay their municipal taxes. How does the municipality fit into the bankruptcy legislation in terms of advancing its claim for taxes and arrears? Practically speaking how does the municipality collect unpaid taxes for linear property, machinery and equipment?
