Managing COVID-19 as an Employer in Alberta Part 2: Government Programs and the Response from Employers

Our next webinar will focus on programs put in place by the Provincial and Federal governments to respond to the new realities faced by employers and employees as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact workplaces. We will look at programs targeted at employers, such as wage subsidy, work sharing, and tax deferral programs. We will also consider programs targeted at employees, including changes to employment insurance, supplemental benefits, and job protection programs. In the second half of the webinar, we will focus on employers. In particular, we will consider actions employers have been taking in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including layoffs, terminations, reducing hours, and wage rollbacks. These actions will be considered in light of the new government programs. We will also provide an update on the operation of leave provisions in employment agreements or policies, and provide information on an employee’s ability to refuse work as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
